Student Design Award - Shortlist

The ten shortlisted entries for the Design Show Liverpool 2008 Student Design Award, sponsored by DuPont Corian (R) are below.
The winner and runners-up will be announced at Design Show Liverpool's VIP Opening Night at 6pm on Wednesday 18th June 2008. Awards will be presented by head judge Wayne Hemingway MBE.

Project: BioPod
Description: New Government plans are set to see organic waste banned from UK landfills by 2020, yet little has been done to help users manage organic waste in the home. Bio Pod utilises vacuum ionization - creating a hygienic, bacteria and odour free environment that encourages the user to recycle organic waste.

Description: Stackable Stor chair is designed especially for public spaces where there is a need for several seats..


Third place
Name: Adam Scott

Project: X Sting Wish
Description: Redesigning the extinguisher to improve perceived and technical efficiency and effectiveness, with a key look at extinguisher life cycles to improve sustainability. Close collaboration with firemen and specialists. Majority of people are injured trying to put out a fire: the aim was to encourage escape and safety of the user.

Project: Tooth Fairy Series (Jewellery)
Description: The series is a range of contemporary sentimental jewellery made from silver castings of my daughter's baby teeth. I examined sentimental value and transferred this to a range of modern sentimental jewellery, inspired by Victorian Sentimental Jewellery and my own life journey.

Project: Wheelchair Accessible Cupboard
Description: To allow wheelchair users to utilise the upper storage areas within a kitchen or other area. I feel that the current solutions do not fully satisfy this need.

Project: EPS Garden Chair
Description: A lightweight, single moulded garden seat that is designed to help interaction between the users as they sit facing each other. The feet holes also act as supports to prevent the chair from tipping.

Project: Portable Car Washing Workstation
Description: Many new homes are built with parking spaces away from the house itself. This presents a problem when washing the car, as there is rarely access to water. This project aimed to design a workstation containing water tanks, washing and rinsing implements and innovative features to ease this scenario.

Project: w'under'pouch
Description: A novelty shaped zip-up bag which holds unwashed underwear in fashionably and discreetly whilst travelling. Invented purely for personal use when staying with friends at University, with my lot, you never know when someone’s going to ransack through your bag to pull a prank or two!! Simple idea, but effective.

Project: Chef&Banquet
Description: The aim for this product was to design a piece of garden furniture that has a functional and social focus Cook (thanks to induction heater in the centre) and eat at the same table, and create a friendly atmosphere where everyone is involved. Materials: Corian, stainless steel, glass ceramic, infrared heater & induction hob.

Project: The Range
Description: A range of multi-functional furniture, simply created from 1 or 2 (interlocking) flowing shapes. The range is made available in a variety of materials including birch plywood (featured), corian, or perspex.
