Un-fold is a collective of six creative businesses working from the English Lake District. We each work in different design disciplines but are united by our approach; combining modern and traditional processes and materials, and advocating quality of design and craftsmanship.
James Hake makes a range of ceramic stoneware, specialising in large bowls thrown at the potter’s wheel. He also produces slab rolled wall hangings and square dishes.
James studied 3-Dimensional Design at Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in ceramics. Following graduation he was accepted on to the Craft Council’s Pottery Skills Course in Ireland where he trained for a further two years. On his return to the Lake District, James established his own studio where he now supplies work to both local and national galleries
“Taking inspiration from Oriental ceramics, I have developed a palette of my own glazes. These range from subtle Shinos, to rich, dark Tenmokus and Copper Reds. Glazes are applied quickly by dipping and pouring in different combinations, which fuse together in the heat of the kiln. As with the thrown pieces I am always adapting and experimenting with glaze recipes, searching for different colours and textures to complement the forms. Currently I am investigating using local materials from quarries, clay seams and wood ashes in my glazes.”
