Linzi Ramsden

Linzi Ramsden creates innovative and multi functional ceramics and artworks inspired by natural forms, geometry and the manipulation of shape and space, each of which can be appreciated separately or grouped to form a series of interlocking or interrelated forms.

Graduating from Staffordshire University with a BA in Ceramics, Linzi completed an MA in Ceramic Design researching design aesthetics and the resulting body of work was launched at New Designers in 2000. She moved to Manchester Craft and Design Centre in 2001, one of the few studios in the country housing a working community of contemporary artists and makers open all year round. From here her work has continued to change, refine and develop, influenced by her daily interaction with the public as well as her own naturally experimental drive and curiosity.

Her early pieces were slip cast, sleek and architecturally inspired, but increasingly her work has become an ongoing dialogue between herself and her materials. Her preference for slab building allows for a more intimate connection with the plasticity of the clay and spontaneity of approach, enabling her to explore, refine and reinterpret form, function and technique. Like an architect or mathematician, she sees shapes and forms three dimensionally or schematically like a section through
a drawing, and is fascinated by the endless possibilities offered by breaking down a simple shape, chopping it up and seeing how it can be reassembled or rearranged. One piece inevitably inspires another - rotated or literally turned on its head or reinterpreted to create something elegant yet unexpected.

Only through the application of texture, colour and pattern does the piece become a ‘vessel’ in the more traditional sense, imbued with geography, history, meaning and context by the selection and application of ferns, seeds, pods and other natural found objects gathered on her regular walks and travels. These treasured items infuse the new vessel with a specific biography, memorialising a particular moment in time.

In an industrial era of commercial and mass production, the handmade has a continued allure and fascination connecting us to a ‘natural’ world that many feel increasingly removed from. Ceramics in particular represents an unbroken tradition throughout human history, continually adapting to our ongoing needs and technological advances, and its intrinsically transformative nature, creating beautiful, functional objects from raw, organic material evokes a deep resonance within us. It is this enduring quality that Linzi Ramsden’s work articulates so expressively. Linzi is happy to discuss opportunities for galleries and exhibitions to show and sell her work, and for commercial and individual commissions.
