Design Factory Ruth Singer

Ruth Singer creates one-off textile pieces in eco fabrics using innovative variations of traditional hand sewing techniques inspired by the study of historic textiles. She uses pleating, appliqué, folding, layering and quilting to create unusual textures and sculptural effects in fabric, which are available as framed wall pieces or as lengths for interior and fashion projects, including bespoke garments and upholstery. She also works to commission for private and corporate clients. Ruth endeavours to run an ethical and eco-conscious practice, and uses only sustainable, recycled, reclaimed and vintage fabrics.

In 2006, Ruth was selected by the Crafts Council as one of the best new makers of the year for Springboard at Origin.

Ruth originally trained in museum studies and worked in museum education for several years, most recently at the V&A and now combines her business with freelance teaching and writing. Her first book, Sewn Up, will be published in Autumn 2008.
