Fast Glass

A new world record for the fastest ever creation of a glass product will be set at Design Show Liverpool – a showcase of design talent taking place in the city’s Contemporary Urban Centre from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 June. The event is a key part of the European Capital of Culture programme.

Fast Glass is a record-breaking challenge to compress the design, production and retail of a recycled glass item into just 24 hours. It was dreamed up by celebrated Brit designers Nick Munro and Ella Doran – in conjunction with glassmakers Liquid Projects.

The day after theDesign Show Liverpool’s VIP gala, Nick will create three designs on paper. The China and Glass buyer for John Lewis will then select the one to be made. Glass bottles will be collected from the VIP gala reception and melted down in a mobile furnace, live at the event. The glassware item will be available to buy from Liverpool’s new John Lewis store in Liverpool – in Ella Doran recycled packaging created from that days Daily Post– within a day. All profits generated from the sale of the Fast Glass range will be donated to CREATE , a charity and social business based in Speke, Liverpool www.createuk.com

Once all of the glass from the bottles has been used, the moulds will be broken. As a result, the finished product will be a real collector’s item and memento of the inaugural Design Show Liverpool.
